A Woman's Addiction Workbook is a 210-page self-help book for women overcoming addiction issues, and was published in September, 2002 by New Harbinger Press. It can also be used by clinicians in therapy sessions. Please note that it is not related to Seeking Safety in any way. Below are a description of the book, how to order it, and an abstract of a new outcome study using it. Women and girls are becoming addicted at greater rates than ever before. Until recently women in recovery were dependent on treatment models based solely on work with men. This self-help book offers a step-by-step program to help women overcome common problems associated with their drug and alcohol addiction-- such as body image, trauma and violence, relationships, stress, and thrill-seeking. It explores how women differ from men in their addiction and recovery, and conveys a supportive tone for the journey to healing. A chapter on co-occurring emotional problems allows readers to evaluate whether they may have any of the key disorders common among women with addiction-- such as depression, posttraumatic stress, eating disorders, and phobias. With a focus on building strength, women take steps to come to terms with their personal addiction stories. Healing exercises are offered in four areas-- feelings, beliefs, action, and relationships-- to help women build self-respect. Exercises include Listen to That Small Quiet Voice, Extreme Self-Care, Self-Soothing, Become Friends with Women, Rethink, Take Charge, Share Responsibility, and Mourn. Throughout, recovery resources are provided. To view the Table of Contents, click here.

Najavits LM, Rosier M, Nolan AL, Freeman MC (in press). A new gender-based model for women’s recovery from substance abuse: Results of a pilot outcome study. American Journal on Drug and Alcohol Abuse. For the complete article, email info@seekingsafety.org
Abstract: Despite repeated calls for gender-based recovery models for women, there has been a lack of empirical studies on this topic. We thus sought to evaluate a women’s manual-based substance use disorder recovery model in a pilot study. Participants were opioid-dependent women in a methadone maintenance treatment program who received 12 sessions of the gender-based model in group format over two months. Assessment was conducted before and after the intervention, with results indicating significant improvements in drug use (verified by urinalysis), impulsive-addictive behavior, global improvement, and knowledge of the treatment concepts. Patients’ high attendance rate (87% of available sessions) and strong treatment satisfaction additionally support the potential use of this treatment model. Future research would benefit from larger samples and enhanced scientific methodology. A set of videos on treatment of trauma/substance abuse is available. These focus on trauma and substance abuse, but have no information on Seeking Safety. They were produced in 1998 by Cavalcade Productions. Two of the videos are for clinicians and one is designed for clients. They offer perspectives on treatment by Lisa Najavits, Francis Abueg, Pamela Brown, Bonnie Dansky, Terence Keane, and John Lovern; as well as several people in recovery. Videos for professionals: 1) Trauma and substance abuse: Therapeutic approaches. 2) Trauma and substance abuse: Special treatment issues. Video for clients: Numbing the Pain: Substance abuse and psychological trauma. All videos can be obtained from Cavalcade Productions: Web: http://www.cavalcadeproductions.com/substance-abuse-treatment.html Telephone: 800-345-5530 Email: info@cavalcadeproductions.com Note: the videos above are not on Seeking Safety, but are more generally on trauma/substance abuse. Currently under development is a multimedia training package on Seeking Safety, which will include video and other materials demonstrating the model. |
